2007 Lewisville Cup Regatta Results September 29, 2007 The Lewisville Cup Regatta trophy remains at DCYC! There were 18 boats of all sizes circling around the starting line at the designated base start time of 1:00 pm on Saturday, each timing their personal start according to their handicap. The race was in the Pursuit format, that is, the slowest boat started first and the fastest boat started last with theoretically enough time allowed between the two starts so that both boats, and all those in between, would finish at exactly the same time. The wind was blowing around 15+mph and white caps were abundant. As time passed, the wind became quite light and very variable. At times, it was non-existent. The conditions took their toll on the competitors and only six of the 18 actually finished. The course was not your ordinary windward-leeward but a distance course starting at our Red-Green buoys, proceeding through the Old Cut to one of the No Wake buoys at Sneaky Pete’s and then finally to the finish line between the two Government buoys on the West side of the 121 cut. As it turned out, the winds made it difficult for those with a spinnaker as the wind never seemed to be in the correct position to make the use of the spinnaker beneficial. So up they went, down they went and then back up they went and finally down for good. Since the handicap was figured in at the start of the race, the first boat across the finish line wins. In the Spinnaker Fleet, Randy Massey’s J80, Shotglass, took line honors (first to cross) with Jay Hoppenstein on his J105, Cyrano, was second. They were the only two boats in the Spinnaker Fleet. In the Main and Jib Fleet, Dan Wolf on Scoots, a J29, was first to cross followed by Will Braat on Optimator, a J22 in second. Third place was Bob Stowe on his Beneteau First 36.7 and forth place went to Ron Seward on his Islander 32-3. The Lewisville Cup trophy is awarded to the yacht club with the best total relative finishing positions down to and including third place in each division. Since DCYC had the best cumulative score the trophy remains at the yacht club. You can see it hung over the hallway leading to the East Room upstairs. A shrimp boil dinner was served up at Charlie’s along with beer after the awards ceremony. A couple of us were driven home! Thanks to Mike and Sherry Krasner and Sherry Ruziki and daughter Kate and the rest of the crew for once again putting on a fun race and dinner for the 2007 Lewisville Cup Regatta. John E.
